Cyproterone Acetate
Do not exceed 12.5mg daily. (Or 25mg every other day.)
Cyproterone Acetate is a medication used to suppress testosterone in trans-feminine people, it is used widely in areas other than the United States. The medication is easily available and greatly effective at reducing testosterone levels; for this medication take care in reading the "Safety and Effects" section.
Dosing and Monitoring
12.5mg or less daily is a typical dose, going above 12.5mg daily can cause issues (see "Safety and Effects" for more information) (Aly 2020), going above 12.5mg daily has no evidence of significantly reducing testosterone levels compared to less than 12.5mg (Zohar Naomi, 2021). Cyproterone Acetate can be monitored through testosterone levels, starting as low as 6.25mg per day and increasing until testosterone levels are less than 50 ng/dl (Heinemann Loather, 1998).
Pill Splitting
We understand that larger pills are much cheaper if you're taking a low dose, however, splitting a pill more than in half can be inaccurate. If purchasing 25mg pills then splitting in half is perfect, if purchasing 50mg pills splitting into quarters is okay. If you must purchase 100mg pills then you are best off splitting them into quarters and then taking 25mg every other day works with the half life of this medication (Khan Omer, 2015).
Cyproterone Acetate is dangerous for pets and those who are pregnant, take precautions to clean the surface you split the pills on after you do so.
Safety and Effects
Cyproterone Acetate and Hyperprolactinemia
Cyproterone Acetate has been shown to cause hyperprolactinemia in trans-feminine people who have not undergone an orchidectomy (Defreyne Justin, 2020). Hyperprolactinemia can cause several problems the most significant of which is cardiovascular issues (Haring R, 2014).
Cyproterone Acetate and Meningioma
At smaller doses (less than 12.5mg daily) the risk is small, however, when going above that (especially above 25mg daily) the risk for the development of a non-malignant (does not grow due to uncontrolled cell reproduction, non-cancerous) increases greatly. This type of tumor can result in "disturbances, headaches, and seizures", and in some cases, it has resulted in death (Aly 2020). Going above 12.5mg daily (and especially 20mg daily) does not measurably suppress testosterone greatly, there is no reason to go above this limit, and doing so can come at great harm (Zohar Naomi, 2021).
